Saturday Night Dead (OTRH/EMFMV 2010 #5 combo)
(Written by jsnell)
Usually after a game, Ken records his thoughts. Well, Ken was sitting at home, Jason was sitting at his home, neither of us were going to sleep anytime soon, so we let it all out. Here it is. A dramatic post-loss podcast that serves as both an On the Road Home and an EMFMV combo. And to the guy in the liveblog asking why we posted our podcast on Thursday last week: enjoy this early one!
We talk about Cal losing 10-9 to Arizona. We are confused about the Pac-10. We don’t know what to make of UCLA. We don’t think the UCLA-WSU game will tell us anything. We are happy about Cal’s defense but confused about the offense. We are confused in general. Also, we mention still-beating hearts being ripped out of chests, get Tucson confused with San Diego, Jason does live play by play of a game that is now over, and more. If you ever wished you could bottle the feeling of two guys talking about Cal in the immediate aftermath of a loss, WISH NO MORE!

Thank you guys for making me feeling a little better as a CAL Fan. It is very hard for me to wake up in 4am, here in Israel, listen to Starkey over the internet, and then hear how the Bears lose.
As always, it is not easy to be a CAL fan, but I believe we’ll make it to the Rose Bowl in the next few years.
GO BEARS!

Thanks guys, that made me feel a little better.
This one didn’t make me mad like the Nevada game. It just made me sad. Sad that I was born in a Cal family and sad that I have to follow this team for the rest of my life because I have no other choice. I couldn’t stop, even if I really wanted to. I’m only 36 so hopefully I have 40+ years of heartbreaks like this to look forward to.
On a serious note, gotta feel bad for the players. They did everything they could, leaving it all on the field. Ugh. As bad as we feel, they have to feel so much worse. I’m proud of them for playing as hard as they did. Hopefully they can pull it together for UCLA because things could really fall apart after that.

Hey guys, great podcast. Thanks for keep us all a bit more level-headed. The whole game just felt so inevitable.
By the way, speaking of horrible TV coverage, the Fox Sports Pacific announcers here in New York were MUCH worse than Palawksi et al. They were consistently announcing down/distance 2-3 yards off of what was shown on the screen.

I am honestly not afraid of the UCLA game. How do we explain this Texas game that everyone seems to be so shocked by?
I previously determined the UCLA defense would be good against Texas.
1) They thus far have an exceptionally poor run defense. See K-State & Stanford.
2) A strong pass defense. See Luck’s sub-par performance & Houston, even with Case Keenum.
3) Texas has not established that run game they keep talking about getting back to, and would not be able to gash UCLA.
Should we be afraid of UCLA’s offensive performance? Not so much…
1) Texas was not ready for the pistol. They probably sympathize with us now.
2) Texas has already shown weaknesses against strong running, as evidenced by their opening game against Rice (with Michigan transfer Sam McGuffie). Rice!
3) UCLA’s pistol cannot possibly be close to Nevada’s level.
4) We’ve had one game of experience against top-notch pistol, and now have two weeks to prep.
On top of all that, Texas should not have been ranked that high in the preseason (and someone explain why Florida is still in the top 10??). Granted, my view is somewhat biased because I have two Texas A&M parents.
Lastly, I implore fellow fans to stop ranting on Tedford. The way the on-line community looks, you’d think that Cal is some ancient Incan/Mayan/Aztec empire about to be swept away by the coming of modern civilization and that we are totally ill-equipped in stopping their guns. (Wait, did someone say PISTOL? My bad.) Take everything with a grain of salt and always, ALWAYS try to put yourself in coaches’ positions as objectively possible. Had we actually won, the number of current detractors would at least halve itself!

Well played as always Valenyal.

disagree. you go for it on 4th and 1, you don’t get any argument from me, or most tedford haters. we blew a golden opportunity to seal the game up there, based on how we were playing defense. it would have been a heartbreaker for the wildcats. if you were cool with getting 3 there, you were scared, just like the coach. and if the coach is scared, the players are scared. overall, it was a very well coached and well played game. doesn’t matter, though. that one call is all it took to prove this coach just doesn’t have a championship instinct. nobody falls backward into a championship.

and what i meant there is that even if we failed on 4th and 1, i wouldn’t have complained about tedford at all, unless we opted for a run up the middle with vereen, which is probably what we would have called. you see why this team is so frustrating? we don’t just suck. going through the 90s was easy. we sucked. end of story. we have serious talent on this team, and we’re not taking advantage of it. THAT is frustrating.

The 4th and 1 arguments are actually fairly sound, and I’ll admit – part of the truth is that I WAS scared. (but I don’t necessarily agree that the coaches, or especially the players, were scared) From the short amount of time I’ve been following Cal, more often that not there appears to be extreme difficulty getting the short yardage. The prominent example that really comes to mind is Arizona ’06, where we tried again and again to punch in a TD from right outside the goalline and failed. I think in a tight, defense-dominated game, weight really should be handed towards the take-whatever-points-you-can-grab mentality.

I am taking the stance that these two losses are valuable lessons for the remainder of the season.
That Nevada loss will helps us in the UCLA and Oregon games.
The Arizona loss will help us against USC, OSU, Stanford, and Washington.
Rose Bowl here we come!
