Ken,
I listened to your podcast — here are my comments:
Defense — It was obvious the goal was to keep the play in front. There was almost no stunting, blitzing or deception. Why show Washington anything when UC Davis can’t score enough to win anyway? The game plan will be much different next week in Seattle. I think the defense is just as good as last year — it could be better.
Offense — The running backs and receivers looked good. Crawford and Brown showed much promise. The O-line was just OK for this is UC Davis and not USC. But Garbers was a disappointment.
Unlike Rodgers and Goff, Garbers can’t seem to throw a tight spiral. You could really see this on the TV replays. The 2nd TD to Crawford was late because it wobbled so much. Also, he sailed a few throws to miss open receivers.
If this was just beginning season jitters, that’s OK. But if he can’t throw a spiral or keeps sailing them over the receivers’ heads, it will be tough going for the offense all season.
As an FCS team, the UC Davis players were not as fast nor as big the Cal group. However, they were well coached and got a lot out of the players they had.
I think we’ll learn a lot more from the Washington game. I don’t think Cal has a chance to win; however, if it’s not a blowout and well played by Cal, then the season could be fruitful.
