Did Longshore really not live up to the hype? I honestly can’t remember too much of him being recruited, so perhaps there was a lot of hype around Longshore (or perhaps there wasn’t). But perhaps Longshore, like most Elite 11 QBs, was *over-hyped*? I mean, if you look at the historical classes of Elite 11, roughly only 50% even have a moderate positive impact on their teams. So I guess my point is, if there was hype about Longshore and he failed to meet it, perhaps the hype was false hype built up high by fans. Thus, Longshore failed to meet the fans’ hype and expectations, but perhaps he’s met the true hype (which is less than fan hype).

Hydro, ‘Hype’ is never a word I’d apply to how a coaching staff feels about a player. ‘Hype’ is entirely a fan thing in my opinion. For Longshore, his hype started when he beat out Ayoob, a very hyped transfer to Cal, for the starting job. That hype was further magnified when Ayoob struggled in 2005.
So yes, Longshore didn’t live up to the hype… not that it is fair how much he was hyped. And I think that’s the point. Riley is now being hyped amongst the fans as the 2nd coming of Tedford (hehe, I don’t usually make that joke). I think it is important for fans to remember the tendency to over-hype players because 9 times out of 10, it’s going to lead to disappointment.
