Nevada OTRH Podcast
(Written by kencraw)
Get my positive thoughts and my negative thoughts, some about the new stadium, some about the game… I’ll let you guess which subject gets the majority of the negatives:
(One thought I had that I didn’t remember on the road: The tackling sucked! Way too little emphasis on wrapping up during the tackles. There was a lot of shoulder diving. If I was Pendergast, I’d spend AT LEAST a half of my time in the first full-pads practice focusing on tackling drills.)

I think the sun is setting on the Tedford era. We didn’t have the lead at anytime during the game today, which is expected when we play USC but not Nevada.
Also, it seems like we played a better game against Nevada in 2010 on the road than we did at home today. I just don’t understand it.

Cal was not properly prepared to play Nevada and that is a reflection of the coaching staff.
Tedford is the reason why Memorial got rebuilt and he deserves some time in the new home. But life isn’t fair, especially at the head coach level. If Cal doesn’t make a bowl, there will be tremendous pressure to replace him.
And now with the new facilities and TV contract, recruiting a top level coach should be doable. I hear Bobby Petrino is available.

Hi Ken,
It is great to hear you on the OTRHP again, but one thing I would like to know is which “cheap seats” are you in, as the legroom in my section was HORRENDOUS, I could not move, I felt like a sardine in a tuna can and I am at the point where I do not want to EVER go back to Memorial if people are going to constantly knee and elbow me the ENTIRE game.

CBF88, we’re in section C and yeah, if you don’t carefully pick your seats, I know what you mean. We happen to be in the very first row above the concourse, so we get an extra 12″ of legroom. We also have two rows, and are mostly made up of kids, which increases the space available to adults considerably.
We’ve got 7 seats, 4 of which with extra leg room, for 2 adults and 4 kids, ages 9, 7, 4 and 1… so there’s a lot of space.
Not that you were implying a wrong, but I’m sorry if I misled in the podcast to suggest that all the cheap seats had lots of space… I’m quite confident they don’t. However, MY seats, have plenty of space. For that I feel lucky, because I’ve been there before.
Suggestion: bring a seat-back that is at least 12″ deep (the depth of seats). You won’t get any more knees in the back and can use all of your seat’s depth.

Thanks Ken for the update. I just don’t think its fair for people to bring seatbacks if sitting in the new sections. There is absolutely NO Legroom whatsoever. I don’t think its fair for me to bring a seatback, as the person in front of me brought a seatback and MY KNEES were up against his back the entire time. I feel jipped in a way and am thinking hard about re-newing my season tickets for next year. I don’t want to go to games where I am uncomfortable and sitting next to an older crowd really dumbs the game down for me (no offense, but these ladies had no idea what they were talking about during the game).

I understand what you’re saying with the seatbacks. There can definitely be some inequity when they are introduced. Some sit further back on the seat than others, etc. I think that’s why Cal offered the pre-attached ones a few years back, because it leveled the playing field with everyone having the same seatback.
I guess what I’m saying is that as long as their backs are thin (which most of them are) and they are all positioned the same way (which they aren’t) the result would be everyone would get the same amount of minimal space but you’d be banging your knees into a seatback instead of into their back, and the same for the person behind you. For most people, that’s an improvement.
But when you get to the fundamentals, there’s just no getting around the 24″ per-row spacing, which is very tight. That’s why so many people were willing to pay $200 extra per seat to get more legroom (even me if I hadn’t been too low a donor). And it’s also why I made sure to sit in the first row (and if it makes you feel any better, I do get a bit of a visual obstruction in the corner of the endzone by the handicap seating in front of me as a trade-off for my legroom).
Sorry to hear it was such a negative experience for you.

It usually doesn’t bother me so much, we’re all going to the games for the same reason, to cheer on the team we love and the school that we went to. But, Saturday just did not feel right for me and I’ve never felt this way about a CAL Game for the past 8 years. I really think that it’s time I gave up the season tickets for the couch.

If you get seats at the very top of the stadium. I would say the top row next to the west wall you also have much more room and you don’t have to worry about anyone being behind you. I sat at the top row in section QQ. It is by the end zone but I didn’t find bad at all. I still enjoyed the game very much.

oh, and as far as sections of the stadium seating where people do not seem to be that into the game at all, you can always lead the way yourself. I was sitting next to mostly people that were not into the game as much as I was. To my fortune the guy next to me started to get into the gameand by the second quarted we had build quite the buzz. We actually got the people around us to get into it a little more. It was a very fullfiling experience.
