On the BruinShow tonight
(Written by kencraw)
Just an FYI. Both myself and Ragnarok from The California Golden Blogs will be on tonight’s episode of the BruinShow. It airs from 6-7 PM. You can listen to it from here:
I guess we’ll be up in the 2nd half of the hour.

I think the basic problem we faced was that there were too many cooks in the kitchen. 3 of us and like 40 of them. And theyd ask a question and we’d either all jump over each other or wait to see who’d jump in and it’d be dead silence. I guess he’ll cut that out for the podcast, but who knows?
I was stunned by how little faith they have in their program. I guess its because of how down we all are after the OSU loss, but I didnt think theyd all pick Cal to win. And that one dude who was all “Cal 47-UCLA 17.”
The only criticism I’d have regarding their content would be that one guy kept harping on the academic standards. I felt you had a good answer, but he was persistent.

Definitely. I wrote them an e-mail with some suggestions on how to improve that.
Yeah, the academic standards thing is so odd. I didn’t have a chance to bring it up but last year’s class had a GPA over 3.50 with only one or two under 3.00. It’s all based on stereotypes, not actual facts. All I know is that when a program starts harping on the subject (it was a common harp of Holmoe), it’s bad news for the program.
Let’s hope their lack of faith is warranted. 🙂

Thanks for coming on guys. There were 4 of us and 3 of you and one guy said nothing but a prediction the whole time you were on. Sorry, I didn’t ask questions directly to each of you. We are new at this ourselves.
The reason I kept coming back to academics is because all of your answers kept coming back to the current players. It is a very big deal for UCLA fans because players like DeSean Jackson wanted to come to UCLA, but the university would not let him in.
You are part of the same UC system and we would love to know how you got your university to relax the standards (of acceptance) for athletics so much.
Look of what our beat writer from the Daily News said about the problem and our likelyhood of getting a top coach to UCLA.

BobTheBruin, we were glad to be able to come on and I think I am speaking for all three of us that came on that we were impressed with what you were doing, despite some of the hiccups. We’re all amateurs here.
I know you disagree but I really think the academics thing is a red herring. Just keep repeating this to yourself: “Holmoe complained about academic standards”.
There’s a fair amount of mis-information out there and often excuses get made for the real reason plays go one place or the other. Cal is pretty darned picky and there have definitely been recruits that Tedford hasn’t gone after because he knew that they wouldn’t make it through the application process. Heck, we lost two little brothers (Mixon and Bishop) of former Cal stars in part because of academic problems. I’m fairly confident the lone issue is whether the coaches/athletic department are willing to let it be an excuse or are just willing to accept their situation. Willmingham never complained about academic standards when he won a Rose Bowl at Stanford, now it’s all the rage at Stanford to complain about their lot in life.
