Thanks for the birthday present, Jim Harbaugh. And I didn’t get you anything.

What an amazing finish. I hate BOTH of those teams so much, but as Stanford has been so weak in recent years, I actually despise $C just a tad more. We were watching AND cheering for Stanford. I feel so dirty.

If LSU loses (as it looks right now), does that mean Cal will be ranked #1??

    #1

    ???????

Boy Jason is fast. I came in only a few minutes after the final score and he had already posted. Am I jinxing the Bears by pointing out that the other team in front is losing 24-14 with 5:00 left in the 3rd quarter? Is it even conceivable that Cal could be #1!?!

I can’t help it. I had to root against USC. We kept shouting, ROLL ON YOU STANFORDS. And I kept calling the ‘furd QB “Johnny Stanford.” As in, “Throw it, Johnny Stanford! Throw it!!”

Biggest upset of the year. Bigger than App State. (Why? Because App State was a two-time I-AA champion. Good teams are good teams. This was STANFORD.) Although I am now suspecting that USC may not really be that good. (As in, it’s possible USC is worse than Cal, Oregon, and Arizona State.)

What channel were you guys watching this on? I couldn’t find it on ANY channel!?! Was I hung out to dry in Sac?

Ah man, I just realized, the one I always forget to check: Versus… ARG!?!

As I wrote on Cal Golden Blog…I rooted for two teams today that I NEVER root for…Stanford did an amazing job and I LOVED watching smug Petey get it–AT HOME!!

The other team is Notre Dame…sorry Pac-10, and all…I just dislike UCLA that much…so far, Notre Dame is pulling off just as an amazing result as Stanford. It’s 20-6 with just under 14 minutes left…

Now, if Florida can keep it up for just fifteen more minutes…(and if Purdue could maybe score a point or two–or 24–it might prevent Ohio State from jumping us, which I fear they’ll do.)

Go Cardinal! Go Gators! Go Boilermakers! Go Irish (it hurts just typing it!)!

    …but most important…

GO #1 BEARS!!! (Not that number 2 is all that bad?!)

Sorry, Ken…it’s channel 65/921on Comcast here in Sac…

…and not just that it was Stanford, Jason…it was AT U$C…HUGE!! With the back-up quarterback…I especially love ALL the analysts that told Carroll to “pick your score!!”

Also, watching Arizona State almost lose to WSU alleviated any real fear I had of them…and there wasn’t much, honestly. The just as easily could have lost that game, too.

UCLA is its usual inconsistent self–can you imaging being the team that gives a HORRIBLE Notre Dame its first win…and on your home field, no less!! I just wish these last nine minutes would tick away faster.

Oregon State is hot one week, dead cold the next (and are especially bad on the road), so that bodes well for next weekend!! (Without looking past them, I haven’t been all that worried about that game this year.)

This week DirecTV turned on Versus HD, too. So I got to see the ‘Furd Miracle in high-def. SWEET.

TrumanHugh: You’re right, you could argue that the two best teams in the Pac-10 are Cal and Oregon. Honestly, I look at the conference and not a single team seems unbeatable. Two losses may take the conference again, as was the case last year.

Gotta hand it to Stanfurd and tip the cap to Capt Comeback and the kid QB. Harbaugh totally gamed Pete Carroll. His soundbites were classic set-ups. Pete Carroll is pissed as hell.

Regardless of the LSU/Florida game – I see Ohio State jumping Cal, be it to #1 or #2.

[Copied from Cal Golden Blog, hey, it’s mine, so it’s not like I’m stealing this!!]

The talking heads calling the Missou/Huskers game all agree that Ohio State DESERVES to jump over Cal…somehow, they figure that a win over previously undefeated, 23rd-ranked Purdue at Purdue is a better quality win than Cal’s victory over previously undefeated, 11th-ranked Oregon AT OREGON…

While I realize these guys are basically nobodies (I mean, they’re calling what is pretty much the D-game of the weekend), but I fear that their sentiments will be echoed to a lot of actual voters who are used to putting OSU high on their ballots.

We’re gonna get screwed…(and I hope I am oh, so wrong!!)

Wow. Just wow. As much as it pains me to say it, you have to give it to the ‘furd. They came through HUGE. When was the last time the Bears beat USC in LA? Congrats to the Cardinal. (ugh, I don’t ever want to say that again)

With LSU picking up a late victory and OSU beating up an overrated Purdue, I think the Bears will find themselves at #4 tomorrow afternoon. I can’t see the voters not voting for the sweater vest over a bye-week Bears.

Not that 3 or 4 matters much at this point. All the matters the rest of the season is the team Cal is playing that weekend. That’s it. No looking ahead. No scoreboard watching. Take care of business each remaining Saturday and the rankings & bowls will take care of themselves.

  15. # 15 joshiemac Says:

Correction–Cal will stay at 3, OSU will jump to 2. It’s been a long wine-tasting bye week Saturday…

I don’t think Ohio State jumps us… first off if some pollsters are using computers to give them a touchstone for their rankings (many do), the machines will tell them that Ohio State’s only game vs a ranked team was today… and that team (Purdue) was only ranked #23… they beat Washinton when they were unranked… Youngstown… Akron… and Northwestern…

Cal beat the #15 team on opening day, and the #11 team on the road… plus our strength of sched took a big boost today…

TENN beat #12 Georga… and Michigan looks for real again, and of course, we beat Oregon on the road… a team which made Michigan look like a highschool team.

No way Ohio State jumps us.

Let’s be friends. Till midnight only.

Danzig, I want to believe you’re right and you’re logic is unimpeachable (particularly the Tennessee beat down of Georgia which was the smackdown to the “was that victory for Cal really a big win?” argument). But if you look at it from just a “pollster logic” perspective, you’ve got two teams that are about equal in the polls. When one has a “quality win”, the quality winner should leapfrog the bye team.

    I’d say it’s a 50/50 on who is #2.

Nevertheless, I agree with Avinash’s comments on the other boards: none of us should care a lick about this. It’s all about the wins. Since we need no help from anyone else, why worry about them? The polls will take care of themselves. Cal’s got 5 consecutive games in front of it that are all very winnable and if they win those, it’s Rose Bowl or better assuming they can win either the Big Game or the Washington game (or UCLA, ASU and Oregon all lose one other game).

I really wished I had kept looking for the USC/SSSssssss game now…I really couldn’t find it in the regular lineup…similar to Ken, I didn’t check Versus…

In agreement to the general feeling of the board, I also feel really good about those boys on the other side of the bay…looking at the stats, SC easily outdid them in numbers…huge gap in yards…correct me if I’m wrong because I was looking at a lot of stats today, but I think Stanfurd were in the 200’s while SC was somewhere around the 400’s yard mark..so it really makes their win THAT much more exciting…I think the highlight of it all was watching arrogant Petey throw a hissy…I mean I guess when you’re ranked #1 consecutively, you have that “right”..but its always fun to watch your enemy squirm…

As for Cal’s possible jump or dip in rankings, at this point, I don’t think rankings matter anymore…college football has become anybody’s guess…things can change any weekend so it’s really becoming difficult to make predictions. It’ll just be really important for CAL to come in and win games..one game at a time. Forget rose bowl. Forget BCS National Game. Our goal right now is Oregon State.

    Roll on you BEARS!!

Polls do matter, just look back at 2004 and the screwing we got from Texas. I stayed up real late last night and saw the Game Day crew say that Cal should be #2 over tOSU. On ESPN they at first said Cal should be #2 but then came right back and said tOSU should be #2. I am sure some producer was reminding them that ESPN did Big 10 games and not PAC10 games and a #2 ranking would be better for their ratings. The wait will be over in just a few more hours when the polls are released.

First off, Stanford over USC is upset of the year? phaw, the pollsters have agree with me when they it wasn’t. the C only dropped to number 10, whereas Michigan still hasn’t gotten back into the Top 25. Let’s be honest here… Stanford is at least in a major conference, they nearly knocked off Oregon two weeks ago, and USC committed some serious mistakes all game long. It’s safe to say this is a situation where USC beat themselves.

Applician State came, saw, and kicked some Wolverine ass.

Now that I’ve said that, here’s some logic:
If UC Davis can beat Stanford
    And Stanford can beat USC…
