Cal holds at #6
(Written by kencraw)
Cal held their #6 ranking in the AP and leapfrogged Texas and Wisconson in the coaches poll (which is who they’d leapfrogged in the AP poll the week before) to get to #6 in that poll as well. Oregon moved up two spots to #11 in the AP poll and up one spot to #12 in the coaches poll. #6 versus #11… that’s huge. As a comparison point, in their last meeting they were ranked #16 and #11 respectively.
I haven’t heard explicit word yet but the rumor is that ESPN GameDay is going to Eugene next week for Cal’s game there. I’ll post as soon as I know for sure.

Where else would they go? It is, hands down, the game of the day nationwide–and the Game of the Month out west. Plus, it will be televised on the ABC/ESPN/Disney family of networks. Go Bears! (Please, PLEASE, tell me that rookie ref from yesterday won’t be leading the crew in Eugene.) Here’s hoping the Bears can play just as well when the “revenge” card is being held by the opposition.

I wasn’t expecting them to go anywhere else. just reporting the facts. I have seen a couple of Bears fans who want them to leapfrog Florida after their close call this weekend, but honestly, that doesn’t make sense quite yet. Personally, I’m happy with #6. I don’t care about the national championship, I care about the Rose Bowl and anything in the top-10 come bowl selection time will get the Bears an at large berth in the Rose Bowl should Cal not be the Pac-10 champ and the Pac-10 champ goes to the national championship game.

I care about the national championship. 4-0, #6 in the nation, how could I not care about it? We still control our own destiny. If a point comes (and I don’t think it will) when we do not control our own destiny in the NC race, then I will start thinking about the Rose Bowl.

OU, LSU/FL and WV hold our destiny. If two of those four teams who are ahead of CAL in the polls, go undefeated, they will play for the championship, not CAL.

I don’t think so bar20. I’m pretty confident that if Cal were to go undefeated, which by the way means beating the #1 team in the land towards the end of the season, we’d end up in the title game. We’ll also get strong strength of schedule points for our road games against Oregon, Arizona St. and potentially UCLA and playing Tennessee.
Perhaps you could say the pollsters hold our destiny in that they can choose whoever they want, but I’d say that we’ve got as good a shot as anyone, as far as controlling one’s own destiny.
