PLEASE NO! No alcohol in Memorial!
(Written by kencraw)
Jon Wilner has been reporting on the budget shortfall for the athletic department at Cal. Among all the talk was this nugget:
One option, based on a brief conversation with AD Michael Williams, is alcohol sales throughout Memorial Stadium.
For the love of God and all that is Holy… NNNOOOOOOO!
I’m no prude. I drink. But Cal games need to remain alcohol free. There are just too many bozos who don’t know how to control themselves at games once they get liquored up. It’s not like one’s private life where I can just stop inviting those sorts of people or stop going to things where those sorts of people are invited. No, I’m stuck with these random jerkwads who can’t control themselves once they get a few beers in them.
DON’T DO IT!

I was at the Utah game with my two daughters. My buddy brought his two sons. At halftime we went out to the grassy area behind the alumni section and I was amazed to see that they were selling beers in one section of the grass. I think that was an excellent compromise for your concern. We were able to enjoy a cold beer while our kids played tag, and we were only there long enough to enjoy 1 each.

Yeah, that’s fine. I might even join you over there some time. They also sell alcohol in the high donor section, but it’s different over there.
But none of that is going to meaningfully help fill a $20M budget shortfall and so it’s not what is being discussed here. What they’re talking about wholesale, promotion and selling of alcohol to the masses.

I remember when pro games used to have “beer night”, cheap beer for the fans, led to a lot of the problems you’re talking about, and was cancelled.

As our families designated prude I feel that I should weigh-in.
I agree with Ken that there is an element that comes with serving alcohol at games. Lord knows I’ve been in my fair share of game related fights when people are three sheets to the wind. BUT the biggest factor of whether or not someone is going to get stupid has nothing to do with their blood alcohol limit, and everything to do with the skin in the game.
Are they a season ticket holder, and what do they have to have to lose by being tossed from the game?
When the Niners were winning and selling out every game, you never heard about their fans being rowdy. Once they lost that season ticket holder base and well became who they are now, all of a sudden you start hearing media reports about hooligans doing stupid things.
Season ticket holders all kinda know each other and get a long. It’s kind of like how when the guy across the row from you at work talks about how great Trump is, you just say “he’s wrong, but i gotta work with him”, whereas the guy online in the comment section, that’s when you can go full thermo nuclear war on him breibart style.
