How much should Cal do to keep Dykes?
(Written by kencraw)
Dykes is rumored to have interviewed for three different jobs: Missouri (although they announced someone else recently), South Carolina and Virginia. It’s unclear if Dykes really wants out of if he’s just trying to get Cal to offer better terms than what they offered, specifically more money and a longer more guaranteed extension.
So the question becomes, how much should Cal offer to keep Dykes?
My thinking is that his salary should be upped to about $2.75M, but that he should only be extended 2 years (so 4 years total from now) with it getting reasonably cheap for the Bears to let him go after 2017. I’m OK with Cal having to give a fairly large sum after next year. With the amount of talent leaving (particularly if Goff leaves) and how the schedule is shaping up, it’s reasonable to expect Cal to take a bit of a step back next year. Thus it’s reasonable for Dykes to insist his contract protects him from a one-year blip.
What do you guys think? (Answer in the comments and respond to the poll on the sidebar)

The base salary you suggest sounds about right. Do you know if he has any bonuses written in? Like, (wild guesses) 10k for making a generic bowl game, another 20k for winning a bowl game, 100k for winning the north division, 250k for the Pac12 championship.
Also, there’s a lot of discussion on whether the assistants should get a raise. I’d have the same bonuses type question for them.

I do know that Dykes has a bonus schedule and that it includes some academic metrics. I don’t know the specifics.

I agree we should make a reasonable attempt to keep Dykes. Next year will likely be a step back even with Dykes, but if he leaves, I think the floodgates open and we brink on disaster.

I read somewhere that his current salary is $1.8M. You want to up it all the way to $2.75? Sounds pretty steep.

Sonny made 1.8M last year, but is up to 2M this year. Which is the bottom, lowest salary in the Pac12. He’s doing somewhat better than last place.

Brad, I figure he’s performing at an average Pac-12 coach level, so he should get an average Pac-12 salary. $2.75M is amazingly average these days. 4 are making over $3.0M. 4 are making between $2.75M and $2.45M and 3 are making between $2.2M and $1.8M (and one of those is Oregon’s Helfrich who I think we’d all admit is under-paid). And USC was probably paying drunk-boy over $3M before they canned him, although we don’t know for sure.
Thus, yeah, $2.75M sounds about right to me. $2.5M at the lowest.
