Garbage from ESPN
(Written by kencraw)
OK, this is one of those things that getting too worked up about is stupid, but nevertheless, it’s ridiculous:
Check out ESPN’s bottom-10 worst teams in the nation and who comes in at #5. Cal.
Completely.

BULLSH… (Oops, family safe site)
Look at all the other teams on the list. Not a single one has a win, much less two. Heck, not a single team on the “waiting list” has two wins. Notice that the FBS team we beat soundly, Colorado, is not on the list, nor even in the “Waiting list” (of course the FCS team wouldn’t be on the list, so that’s why they’re not relevant). It’s just stupid. There’s no way to objectively justify their being on the list nor have a reasonable reply to my above objections.
It’s nothing more than this bozo Mark Schlabum just not liking that Cal was ranked and picking on them because he doesn’t like that Cal occasionally gets respect he thinks we don’t deserve. It’s the pinnacle of a lack of objectivity.
The reality is quite different. Cal is still a top-50 team who lost a shootout to another top-50 team. There’s no way they belong in the bottom-10 (teams “ranked” 110 to 119).
Bogus move Mark Schlabach.
Update at 5:00 PM: Reading the comments on the Bottom-10 article, the #5 spot on the list is reserved for teams that didn’t live up to expectations that week. In that case, I change my objection. He’s not an idiot for thinking too little of Cal. He’s an idiot for not knowing how to make a list. If he wants to have a “team that most under performed” item or list, that should be, you know, outside the bottom-10 now shouldn’t it?
Again, nothing to get too worked up about in either case.

Cal’s cred (if we really ever had it) in the eyes of the average college football fan is shaky at best. If nothing else, ESPN is an aggregate for the conventional wisdom of the average college football fan. From what I’m hearing we are seen as a team of perineal underachievers who consistently choke on the national stage. Just last week I was at a bar on vacation and had to listen to a group of guys from the midwest just rag on Cal for hours during the Nevada game. These were neutral observers as well. It wasn’t the first time I had to sit and listen to things like that. I’ve heard it all over the country when I travel on business trips proudly sporting Cal apparel.
I’m not saying it’s deserved (it isn’t Cal’s fault that they were overrated by the press) but that’s the sentiment that’s out there. Thank god it hasn’t trickled down to the recruits as Tedford & Co still seem to be doing well on the national stage.

The #5 spot on that list is something of an honor, as far as as being included on a “Bottom 10” list goes. It’s usually reserved for a higher level team that’s fallen short of expectation and/or potential.
Am I pleased to see us there? No. Do I understand it? Of course.
I guess what we take from this is the fact that Cal is still perceived as an upper-tier team in the eyes of the national media.

Colorado State is on the list. We beat Colorado 52-7 the week after they beat Colorado State 24-3.

Yeah, I didn’t know about the #5 slot, but I was pretty ticked to see a team (any team . . . . . okay, my team) on there with 2 wins.
Oh well. Onward and upward.
