After the Fall (EMFMV 2009 #9)
(Written by jsnell)
This week we recap the Oregon State game, specifically the scariest moment in recent Cal history. The future of Jahvid Best, the future of the Cal Bears, the difficult path ahead against Arizona and Stanford, and Stanford’s defeat of Oregon. Jason tries to improve on his awful Bill Walton impression. And yeah, there’s a secret word. Try to find it and work it into the comments to win a no-prize.

– Would it be horribly ignorant to ask who Bill Walton is? The impression still sounded, shall we say, um, weird.
– It seems like injuries have taken the forefront this season, particularly for some star players. To name a few: Gresham, Gronkowski, Bradford (twice!), Grothe, Tebow (well, not quite as extensive), and now Best. Frankly I think the best option is for him to just sit out the rest of the season. I wouldn’t mind just letting him lie and recover in a comfortable bed of his choice (cotton, microfiber, silk, whatever strikes his fancy), at least until the bowl game.
– Best’s draft stock must certainly have plummeted, though it’s been dropping throughout the season as our o-line fails to break open some holes for him. Even if he returns, will he produce enough to become a top pick again if the rest of the team is still suffering? (see: Michigan ’07 w/ Chenne/Hart/Long)

WHO IS BILL WALTON? Ohmygod.
I won’t deny it’s weird, though.

The cold, bleak nature of Cal’s middling mediocrity has left me running to the warm embrace of my microfiber jacket.
On a serious note, it is so hard being a Cal fan. It really is. The talent disparity on display during all of our losses leaves me with the very depressing feeling that we could be in for more of the same during the next few years. The conference is flush with great young players. Sadly, not many of them call Strawberry Canyon home.
As you said in the podcast, as an old blue I am happy that we are bowl eligible. And I’m fully confident the team is giving it’s all out there. But with the hype (not the team’s fault) and my ever-increasing financial dedication with season tickets, I’ve come to expect more. Maybe that’s the problem. They’re cal, they are going to let me down. As a lifelong fan you’d think I would have realized that by now.

I happily admit that I was wrong about the AZ game. I’m still not very optimistic about the next few years, but wins like last night are great to experience.

I was looking for new office chairs and saw a microfiber office chair at the store that reminded me of this podcast. Great podcast as usual, keep up the good work. GO BEARS!!!!
