The Lion King (EMFMV 2009 #7)
(Written by jsnell)
Our longest and most interminable episode yet! If you can get through this one, you’re made of Sturdy Golden Stuff.
Ken didn’t go to the WSU game. Jason did. This adds up to some pretty random analysis. We pre-hash the ASU game. We talk Pac-10 football, including bowl scenarios both ridiculous and sublime. Jason goes on a lengthy rant (people who actually have lives, fast forward through this part) about feeling kind of oogy about going to games in an era where Cal’s teams are actually successful. And what does The Lion King have to do with it all? If you can figure out what the heck we’re talking about, let us know, because we have no idea. Jason also does a terrible Larry King impression and we provide homework for our listener(s).
And when all is said and done, all those people who asked us to record longer podcasts will declare, “We take it back.”

I love hearing about Cal football, and work is boring, so thanks for providing posts and podcasts! Your guys’ discussions on all things Cal are smart, insightful, and contains, dare I say, intuitive thoughts. Thanks again!

Your podcasts (this one in particular) are an intuitive entertainment choice for commutes affected by the bridge closure.
One thought in regards to your Memorial Stadium gameday experience discussion: the sense of inconvenience/discomfort I now feel after attending games-especially sold out ones-PAILS in comparison to the hopeless and depressed way I used to feel when leaving that stadium. That used be to a LONG walk back to the car parked on MLK. Now at least I’m happy most of the time, if somewhat uncomfortable and inconvenienced.
Also, I’ve actually talked myself into enjoying the year Cal has to play outside of Memorial Stadium-assuming it’s only 1 year. It will be fun to be able to engage in proper tailgating festivities outside the stadium. Right now I generally go to a bar for a few beers & watch whatever game is on TV. It will be a nice change for a year to do the whole tailgate thing with BBQs, playing catch, etc. For those of us with families it will be a little easier to drive right up the stadium and give the kids some room to run around and play.

Truly epic podcast. Incoherent, rambling, insightful (and intuitive) as ever. Thanks from a California expatriate in NYC. And just to bring it all full circle:

You guys are awesome. I love you all.

Intuitive people will dismiss your game-day complaints as self-centered whining.

I disagree. I think the intuitive will understand my mixed emotions about success and its attendant complications, versus the pressure-free atmosphere of the dead-end losers.

For next week..
The coolest mascot in the Pac-10 is Sparky. Tied for worst are Donald Duck and Tommy Trojan. Butch T. Cougar is good and Oski is above average. The tandems are uncool — Joe and Josephine Bruin and Wilbur and Wilma Cat don’t make the A team.
Honorable mention goes to Benny Beaver and “Dubs” — the Washington malamute.
No mention goes to the team without a real mascot.
This should all be intuitive to any Pac-10 fan.

I’ll be honest guys. I typically don’t have the time in the week to really listen through all of your podcasts. But sitting on a train headed to New Haven, I finally got the chance to digest an entire one.
Wow. Truly epic indeed.
Jason, I must say I had no idea what the hell you were talking about with the Lion King reference. I was more shocked that you had only seen the film once and DO NOT own it. Blasphemy.
You guys really just need to turn it into a fullout radio broadcast if you’re going to continually go this long. You could have wacky sound effects and kiddy contests. Hell, I’d call in. 😛

I’ll tell you, @bearswithfangs, we recorded this one in the evening and the later it went, the punchier I got. It’s a miracle I didn’t actually start _singing_ “The Circle of Life.” Or trying out my Jeremy Irons evil-Lion accent.
But I figure, podcasting should be fun. And so I basically turn off the regulator on my brain when we do the EMFMV podcast. But I agree, at about the 55 minute mark I was off my rocker.
