11:59	Jason Snell: Hi, everyone. This is Jason Snell here in the Bay Area, reporting live from my living room. Ken Crawford is onsite at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
11:59	Jason Snell: Earlier Ken reported, “Just an FYI, there will be a live-blog today. Come back around 12:15 for the first update. BTW, it’s HOT today in Pasadena! I took pictures around the stadium at 9:30 AM and was sweating like a pig going up and down the steps. It is a beautiful stadium and should remind the Bears a lot of their home field.”
12:07	Jason Snell: Back in a few minutes to start the game.
12:11	Ken Crawford: Hi there, I’m in the pressbox everyone. Boy is it hot today.
12:12	Jason Snell: My weather station says it’s 77 here in Mill Valley. And kind of humid. My condolences, Ken.
12:14	Ken Crawford: Some pre-game info: -Bears are in white tops and yellow bottoms -Full Cal band is here -Stadium is 90% empty right now, mostly because people are trying to avoid the heat I think. -Cal section looks to be 3 sectons wide in Northwest corner.
12:15	Jason Snell: Uni Watch: Classic Cal look.
12:15	Jason Snell: They just entered the 4th quarter in Texas-Oklahoma. I assume this means nobody’s gonna actually see the first part of the Cal-UCLA game.
12:15	Ken Crawford: Oh, it’s also amateur/high school band day. There are about 20 here.
12:16	Ken Crawford: Cal band just took the field. Baton toss watch: not a clean catch but I doubt instant replay will overturn the catch call.
12:32	Ken Crawford: UCLA wins the toss and defers, so Cal will receive (going North to South)
12:34	Ken Crawford: Vereen and Ross back for the kickoff.
12:34	Jason Snell: The game’s not on TV, so we appreciate your details, Ken.
12:36	Ken Crawford: Hey, give me a break. Everyone here’s watching the Texas vs. Oklahoma game on TV so I dont’ know how early you guys are getting these details.

12:38	Jason Snell: Bears are driving, and across the 50 with a first down. Or so I hear.
12:39	Ken Crawford: So far UCLA is working really hard to plug up the middle but the outside has been pretty open. Cal has been doing rollouts to prevent that.
12:40	Ken Crawford: And it really payed on that option play. It got everyone sucked in and then UCLA was left out of position. Plus some really good blocking by the WRs.
12:41	Ken Crawford: Hey guys. Check ESPN for the game. It might be on one of those channels in the mean time.

12:42	Ken Crawford: Point being I’m getting a feed here in the pressbox that looks like somebody is showing the game somewhere associated to ESPN.

12:47	Ken Crawford: Oooo. Best was a half-step from breaking that 2 yard loss for a long run. That was a great move by the UCLA defender who then made a great tackle.

12:47	Ken Crawford: But then Best botched the toss on the next play. OK Riley, 3rd and 21. Just don’t do anything stupid.

12:49	Ken Crawford: And while we’re doing this. Anger shanked another punt.
12:50	Jason Snell: If OU-Texas goes into overtime I’m gonna cry.
12:51	Ken Crawford: But the defense is looking really strong, so that’s good. UCLA’s punting game is looking much better and they just pinned us to the 3. That was a nice punt, but it they got a very lucky bounce.
12:51	Ken Crawford: NICE! Illegal motion forces them to re-kick.

12:59	Ken Crawford: Defense is looking fairly normal but the 3-4 is confusing Prince enough and Hagan is a one-man ball-swatting crew right now. And yes, the Bears have looked confident and determined all day.

1:06	Ken Crawford: That was not the best run stopping by the Bears. That’s OK. Still up 14-7 with a lot of positives. For the most part I’ve been happy with the defensive effort. Special teams… please, please, PLEASE… let’s not repeat 2005, OK?

1:12	Ken Crawford: I really don’t like these bunch formations. I don’t care if they run or pass out of them. It’s just too many defenders too close to the ball.

1:17	Ken Crawford: I’d debat that with you Tedfordium if you weren’t kicking everyone’s rears in the Pick’Em.
1:20	Ken Crawford: End of the 1st quarter: The Bears have looked pretty darned good. It’s disappointing that one drive went for a TD for UCLA but overall it’s looked good. Riley is 4 of 7 (Prince only 2 of 6) and connected on the long ball. Upcoming is a key 3rd down.
1:20	Ken Crawford: Well, 1st down UCLA, but it’s the way you want, on a busted play with a QB scramble.
1:22	Jason Snell: This is a weird game. I feel strangely disconnected.

1:27	Ken Crawford: That Best rushing play was all about pacing. Cal rushed through the huddle and the snap not letting UCLA get set.

1:32	Ken Crawford: Man, it really is the baby bears down here in Pasadena. They did the kid growl contest between quarters. They just did the shuffle the football on the big screen with the same sound-track. If I didn’t know any better I’d think I was in Memorial.

1:33	Jason Snell: Well, just when you think there’s momentum… 21-14 UCLA.

1:34	[Comment From Tedfordium] I’m hoping that Nick Holt comes up with some great schemes against Arizona St. I haven’t watched the Devils play this year, but I hear that their defense is solid. Winning on the road is tough, especially for young teams.
1:34	Ken Crawford: I just can’t believe my eyes on that one. The Bears had that play so bottled up but somehow he had enough patience to squirt through.
1:36	Ken Crawford: Tedfordium, I think ASU is a joke and am pretty sure UW will win that one. Locker is healthy, right?

1:38	[Comment From Tedfordium] I’ve got Washington winning in the pick em, maybe I just thinking winning on the road is difficult because of how we tend to struggle… It’s been cold all week in Seattle, so the heat might bother the UW players.
1:38	Ken Crawford: Yup. Definitely when a play like that the safety needs to be a, you know, safety and not let it go for 70 yards.
1:39	Jason Snell: Not a good thow by Riley on that one.
1:40	Ken Crawford: that was almost a brilliant play. Got to give Riley props. He threw the right ball. No one else was going to catch it and it had a chance to get the 1st down.
1:41	Jason Snell: Better punt there by Anger. 70 yards in the air. And coverage on the ground.
1:41	Ken Crawford: Isi earned his scholarship on that punt alone. What a great pursuit on a 72 yard punt that well out-kicked the coverage. Boys, (and Katster) Anger is BACK!
1:42	Ken Crawford: Here’s a stat no Cal fan wants to hear: The last UCLA running back who ran for 74 yards for a TD? Maurice Jones-Drew ran for 76 in 2003.

2:13	Ken Crawford: This is too prevent. Funny joke from the press-room: Guy 1: Why didn’t they call a timeout? I would have called a timeout with 9 seconds and had one shot in the endzone. Guy 2: I would have called a timeout with 12 seconds and kicked the field goal.
2:14	Jason Snell: FG good. And it’s Cal 35, UCLA 20 at the half.
2:14	Ken Crawford: Just like rollon said: Prevent costs 3 points.

2:19	Jason Snell: I’m rooting for a 2-0 final score where everyone ends up injured and the safety is scored on the final play. One day, one day…
2:22	Ken Crawford: Catholic Ken is rooting for ND but Pac-10 Ken is rooting for USC. Right now Pac-10 Ken is winning more hearts and minds in my head.
2:23	Ken Crawford: Yes, there are multiple of them up there.
2:29	[Comment From Tedfordium] If you had to pick a player of the game after the first half would bit be Jahvid or Riley?
2:32	Ken Crawford: Riley for sure. If nothing else, that Jahvid TD run isn’t a TD without Riley’s block. Add in that Best has mostly been bottled up (minus the one play) and that Riley’s throwing is what is loosening the running game and I go with Riley. But I might just pick Jones if I was given him as a choice.
2:32	Jason Snell: I’ll say Best. Why not.

2:32	Jason Snell: Ken’s also seen a quarter more of the game than me.
2:36	Ken Crawford: Now that was an acceptable kick with reasonably good coverage.
2:37	[Comment From rollonubears] best has this idea that on every run, he has to “wait for the hole to develop.” usually a good strategy, but when you need a couple yards, and you’ve got the outside, just bang for a couple or go for the corner. we need a stop to open this half. keep the momentum. go bears!
2:37	Jason Snell: Wow, that was terrible coverage. I thought DBs were supposed to cover receivers, not let them catch the ball and then tackle them
2:38	Ken Crawford: That was tougher than it looked Jason. He threw to his back shoulder long before the WR stopped his route and came back for it. It probably looked worse on TV than it was.
2:38	Jason Snell: Nice stop there by Bishop
2:39	Jason Snell: Good defense in the endzone on the deep chuck ‘n duck
2:39	Jason Snell: Hagan, nice attempt at the pick there.
2:40	Ken Crawford: Good to see UCLA using timeouts early. As for Hagan, you’d like to see him catch that ball even though it’s unlikely he gets his feet in bounds. Still good defense.
2:43	Jason Snell: Another field goal for the Bruins.
2:43	[Comment From Tedfordium] Lots of man coverage in this game, I like what I see. We’re playing aggressive and attacking the young QB. If they’re going to beat us he will have to do it over the top

2:43	Ken Crawford: One of two things is true: Either Prince is only being given one throwing options on a lot of plays or he’s locking on a primary receiver. Luckily that’s working out well for the Bears, sans the field goal.
2:43	Jason Snell: I think taking the points is probably not a bad idea.
2:44	Ken Crawford: BTW, Syd is injured and looks to be out for the game.
2:44	[Comment From rollonubears] hagan’s got some seriously suspect hands. probably why he’s on defense. dropped about 10 easy picks last year. could have led the ncaa. dropped off this year, completely, but looks like he’s coming back a bit today.

2:47	Jason Snell: I like it when people go for it, in general. Statistics will show that you’re better off going for it.

2:51	Ken Crawford: For what it’s worth. The rumor in the pressbox is that Jahvid is hurt. We can’t find him anywhere on the field. No official announcement. Wait, he just came running on the field… and into the huddle!

2:53	Jason Snell: Wow, that was a bad pass, riley.

2:54	Ken Crawford: Back to a 3 score lead. That pressure on Riley on 3rd down really hurt. It affected his throw to Isi and he didn’t have time to find a wide open Holley in the endzone.

2:57	Ken Crawford: I think Tavecchio just won his kicking job back. That’s two in a row inside the 5.
2:57	Jason Snell: It’s nice that Jahvid reappeared.
2:59	Jason Snell: That was just a little bit of pass interference.
3:00	Ken Crawford: Now that was just stupidity. There was no reason for that. The ball was WAY off the mark.
3:02	Jason Snell: Nice drive here by UCLA, and that was a good QB scramble.
3:05	Ken Crawford: The dual of the 2nd half field goal kickers continues. Not that I mind with 18 minutes left to play.
3:09	Jason Snell: So, summing up where we are right now: I think we’ve established that UCLA is not nearly as good as USC or Oregon. And Cal is not as bad as they looked the last two games.
3:10	Ken Crawford: Cal needs to open it back up again. UCLA is collapsing on Best on every play. We almost should be using Vereen when we want to dominate on the ground. Not because he’s better. But because he doesn’t draw so many defenders.

Jason the start of the game was on ESPN Classic and then switched over to ABC after the Texs-OU game was over. If you live in Mill Valley you should beable to afford the full ESPN package!

@bar20: I don’t want to waste $12 a month on the DirecTV sports package, which is a gigantic waste of money since it’s largely junk (regional sports networks) and I watch enough TV. I used to get Classic, but they moved it to that tier.

(And unless you know how big my paycheck is, I don’t think you get to judge what I should be spending my money on.)
