DeSean to go pro

DeSean Jackson announced at the 1 PM press phone conference that he is going to go pro. No surprise there.
I wish him the best at the next level.

I don’t wish him any best.
I wish him a career equal to that of Jerry Porter…

Way to take the high road there bro’.

This may be the right decision for him. I just wish he told us sooner.

Hey now, it’s not like I wished him a career of a JJ Stokes or Mike Williams, aka high draft picks who flamed out because of unrealistic expectations.
I merely wished him a second or third round pick where he’ll be a third string WR for 10 years or so on a good team, or an overmatched first stringer on a bad team…
I know the Raiders won’t select him in the first round, but I’d be happy with him in round 2 or 3…

i’d love to see the Raiders pick up Hawkins however

Does anyone know if Boateng is actually going to be able to help us next year? Will he be able to play?

I can’t say that this wasn’t expected, but DeSean’s explosiveness and playmaking will be missed. His runback against Tenn this year at Memorial was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen live. Sure, he had an ego but what top WR doesn’t? He had great hands and wasn’t afraid to take a hit. His 4.3 speed didn’t hurt either.
Who can blame him? If a company offered me over a million during my junior year at Cal I probably would have jumped at that too.
Good luck in the NFL, DeSean.

On a related note, I have a question for the 6 people (in the poll so far) who think that DeSean going to the NFL is good for both DeSean and the Bears: how can losing someone like DeSean be anything but a negative for the Cal? I think they’ll be OK without him, but there’s no hiding the fact that Cal would be a better offensive team going into ’08 with DeSean on the squad.

Joshiemac, there are those who think DeSean didn’t have the best attitude and was the source of some discontent in the locker room. There were a number of instances that at a minimum pointed in that direction. Everything from an interview with DeSean’s father during a game in which he stated that DeSean should get the ball more to DeSean himself stating after the bowl game that his decision to go pro was harder after Riley’s performance in the game, an indication he was not happy with Longshore and was willing to state it publically.
I’m not sure how bad it was but I think it was a minor factor in the lack of team chemistry. There’s no doubt we’re losing a great talent, but it’s probably a good thing for the make-up of the 2008 team that the Longshore/DeSean era can be put behind us.

Ken-I get the attitude/team chemistry aspect of DeSean leaving. Obviously, something was seriously wrong on that front this year. But even taking that into account, I still think Cal would be a better team with him split out wide. We don’t have a single returning starter at WR and all the impressive scout-team work in the world doesn’t even begin to approach the demonstrated skills of DeSean. Who knows, maybe one of these guys will step up and be a star, but that’s uncertain at this point.
