Road Trip to Fort Worth! Who’s With Me?
(Written by jsnell)
Cal will be playing in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl in the ancestral homeland of Justin Forsett on New Year’s Eve. And who doesn’t love a helicopter?
The guy who sits behind me at Cal games is from Dallas, works for American Airlines, and flies in to all the home games. I suspect he’ll be cheering the Bears on, along with Forsett’s entire family.
Any guesses about how many other Cal fans will actually take the trip? I’d do it if you paid me… paid me large sums of money. But otherwise, um, I don’t think so.

I will boycott the game. As a loyal Berkeley student, I cannot support a bowl game sponsored by instruments of death…
Naw, I’m just pulling your leg. Vegas, baby, Vegas! I’d be willing to take Air Force giving 10.
Unless we go in a different direction at QB…

Sigh, I’m a current bear formerly hailing from the Dallas area… I’m debating whether or not to go… I may have reached the limit for emotional and monetary investment into this football team.
On another note, our QB of the future also is from big D. All hail Brock Mansion!

Hey, RileyEra, they are not playing in Vegas…
I voted in the poll “Only if they paid me,” But only because I am poor. But if could afford it then it would be, “Yes, I’m excited.”
The bowl game is a disappointment given their 5-0 start. No doubt about that. But are we so spoiled? The Tom Holmoe era (1997-2001) basically coincided with my tenure (grad student) at Cal (1996-2003). They were abjectly miserable and never won the big game or went to a bowl game. But here the Bears are with a chance to have another bowl win and another winning season.
The Tedford era is still upon us. And when it ends Cal will slide back into mediocrity (if we are lucky). Cal may yet redeeem itself next year, but enjoy this, even this, while it lasts.
I am not saying that everyone should empty their bank accounts to go to the Armed Forces Bowl. But a little positivity, people! And if you have the means then go represent the Bears (or send me in your place). You never know– in the future, Cal might be a borderline At Large BCS possibility and we don’t want them to get passed over because of fan attendance issues. You are not “obligated” to support your team as the poll suggests, but you should do it because you are a fan.
So celebrate this bowl. Enjoy it while it lasts. I know, Cal was essentially #1 for an hour, but its all relative. The next Holmoe era could be just around the corner. So every bowl game, even this one, is a blessing.
Go Bears.

The bowl is disappointing because the team is playing so poorly that they’re not fun to watch. If Cal started out 1-6 and then finished with five straight wins, I’d be much more excited. But that 5-0 team is dead, and a 1-6 team is not particularly lovable.

I can understand. I have not been jumping up and down and clapping much during the second half of the season.
But I am sincerely looking forward to the bowl game. I am hoping that with some time off we can see some improved QB play (time for Nate’s chipped bown to heal). I also am eager to see what Justin can do in his hometown.
Anyhow, that’s my take and you are certainly entitled to yours. I am still happy with the bears as I consider the big picture.

I’ve been to Cal’s last three bowl games but will not go to Ft. Worth. I’d rather play golf that day.

Comeon Uncle Rick, it’s Fort Worth!
I’d go, but I have very important business to attend to that day at work. Namely a holiday party lol.

I would’ve happily gone to the Vegas or Emerald Bowls, but Forth Worth on New Years Eve? Not so much.
Go Bears though. Always Go Bears!
Now where’s my big prize for winning the Pick ’em straight up award? How about a giant Olmec Indian head?

Here is a simulation of the game:

Yikes! That simulation seems hauntingly real.
I’m an alum and season ticketholder who goes to some away games. I would have gone to Vegas, Emerald or Sun (went to that last year to watch OSU) – but Texas? Please.
I too agree we should enjoy the Tedford era while is lasts, but a 6-6 team should not be in a bowl game.
Fans, particularly us Bear Backers, should not be so fatalistic and think after Tedford is gone, it’s back to a crud team. We can find, attract, and pay for a decent coach. We did in the late 80’s.
Support Tedford, but don’t think next year “is our last chance.”
Go Bears!
