Lost in the Fog (Cal 52, Maryland 13)
(Written by jsnell)
It was a foggy night in Berkeley…
Cal’s offense was in fine form…
Kevin Riley’s accuracy was questionable at first, but that guy can sure move…
And the Bears scored…
And scored…
And scored…
And scored…
And Shane Vereen scored some more.
Before the game, I thought it would be 35-17. I mean, picking a 39-point victory is a little unseemly, don’t you think?

I thought the Bears looked great last night. It seemed like all weekend long, most teams played a sloppy, confusing, rusty first-week malaise. Not Cal.
They looked pretty sharp. They were focused, patient and quick.
My immediate concern is their kick-off coverage. Still. They allowed Maryland far too many return yards. I know that Tedford addressed this in camp, but they still need to work on tightening up their coverage and completing their tackles.
I feel far more better having seen them finally play a game. I do believe this is a special team, one that could achieve great things.
(That said…I am a little concerned about playing Washington at the end of the season. They looked pretty good/fantastic against LSU and, probably, should have pulled off the upset. I can only imagine how well they’ll play after a season of tough competition.
Fortunately, we’ll have them at home and we’ll have pretty much the same amount of tough competition behind us, so…
I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a dramatic turnaround, recordwise, for the Huskies, similar to Cal going from 1-10 in 2001 to 7-5 when Tedford took over in 2002.)
Go Bears!

Agreed TrumanHugh. One correction: we play UW in Washington. I agree that if they continue to look sharp all season, that could be a tough one for the Bears.

Thanks for the correction, Ken. In my mind, I switched the two Washington schools…wishful thinking, I suppose!

Jason, these are awesome… esp the ones with motion blur…. however why no bigger versions of these pics? What gives?

@danzig: If you click on the photos you should be taken to Flickr, where you can see bigger versions. And thanks!

@Jason, you can see full sizes on flickr because you’re logged in as yourself. For the rest of us, full sizes have been disabled.

Can you not see the large size? I thought anyone could see the large size. Sigh.

Just modified it to be Creative Commons — let’s see if that does the trick.

Thanks Jason! That did the trick.
