Great stuff as always Ken.
So question. Scariest coach to have yelling at you: Tedford, Ludwig, or Marshall?

Hmmm… that’s a tough one. It’s definitely not Ludwig. If you met him in a dark alley you’re not going to be afraid. The only reason his yelling matters if you want to start/play. Now, Marshall, he’s one tough looking guy and the bulldog in him makes him scary on Main St., much less the alley. In the end though, I’m going to have to go with Tedford because he’s got that stare that says “I don’t even have to yell to bring you to your knees in fear, and you and I both know it.” So when he does yell, it’s not just the junkyard dog, it means something.
What makes Tedford interesting is that he’s got the full range of emotions as a coach. He has a smile and laugh that can light up a room, he can be excited or indifferent, heck, he can even be surprised if you can believe it. But the emotion you don’t want is the “what kind of idiot reporter are you?” stare and answer.

That’s a bit what I was suspecting. When I first met Tedford, I was surprised to as how genuinely nice he was, but was instantly struck with fear at his “(pause) Oh really?” reaction when I told him I was a Cal blogger.
Not that I had done anything wrong, but I sure as hell thought I might have.
Now the more entertaining question is if you’ve ever gotten the “what kind of idiot reporter are you?” stare and answer. “P

Pretty much all reporters have gotten that “you idiot” stare. He never actually says you’re an idiot, but the answer is condescending yet honest.
Personally, I think I’ve gotten it about 3 or 4 times over the 3 1/2 seasons I’ve been doing this. It’s slowed down lately. As he gets to know you and knows that you generally ask reasonable questions, he’s more forgiving of the random brain fart. As an example, I forgot that Derrick Hill is out this spring recovering from a knee injury and I asked about his where abouts on Saturday and while Tedford’s answer still had a tinge of the “you should know this bozo” in its tone, I wasn’t feeling the death stare.

*Shudder* I just wet my pants a bit reading that story.
I do recall an article from Andrew Kim at the Daily Cal which exemplified everything you’ve said about Tedford, from his ability to make you feel terrible about yourself to making you feel golden at the drop of a dime.
