Spring Practice
(Written by kencraw)
Spring Practice starts on Saturday. I’ll be going down to cover it on 5 different occasions over the course of the practice, the first being next Tuesday, March 17th… hey that’s St. Patricks Day. Luck ‘O the Irish to you from an Irish Catholic!… In any case, I’ll be doing podcasts on each of those 5 visits, so check back here over the next 6 weeks for approximately weekly podcasts from Spring Practice.

Dear Ken,
I look forward to the posts. I am neither Irish nor Roman Catholic, but I will be entering a PhD program at Notre Dame next year.
We will need a little luck to replace our linebackers and get better results from the same receivers and quarterback.
Go Bears!

Duke, I can’t help with the Irish part, but if you ever want help with the Roman Catholic part… you let me know. š
I wouldn’t let any of your Cal friends know you’re at ND. Seems to be a general dislike for them amongst the Cal base. I know I get a lot of crud for my loyalty, particularly from Avinash.
Are you planning on going to the football games as a student? I hear its quite an experience.

Hi Ken, I think I’ll stay confessionally Reformed… but thank you for the offer š
I only support one college football program. I might go to a Notre Dame game vs. stanfurd or USC to root for injuries. Other than that, I plan on spending my Saturdays at a sports bar watching Cal football on TV.
The real bummer is that I will be doing dissertation research in Europe in 2012 when Cal travels to the midwest to take on Ohio State.
I’m not going to Notre Dame for football, but rather for academic reasons. That being said, I am pretty happy that my doctoral gown will be blue and gold!

You’re also German Catholic, but I don’t about you celebrating October 31st…

OK, Bro, I give… what holiday of note would German Catholics be celebrating on October 31st?
Halloween? Seems a little broad to pin on “German Catholics” particular since it’s non-Christian roots seem to come from the Celts. Plus I’m sure at some point Halloween has gotten the passing reference on this blog that I gave St. Patrick’s day.
Reformation Day? Why in God’s name, quite literally, would a Catholic, German or otherwise, celebrate the day Luther started the destruction of Christiandom? Just because he was German?
The best I can come up with in my seaching this morning for a legitimate German Catholic holiday on October 31st is St. Wolfgang, who’s feast day is indeed October 31st. He was a Bavarian Bishop just before the High Middle Ages who is of relatively little note amongst Saints.
…which, despite the obscurity, I’m sure you’ll now claim is what you were referring to all along.
:sigh … only my brother.

October 31st had two major Germanic-Christian related occurrences?!
Goodbye dartboard, hello wikipedia…
