I’ve never been to the lair but I did enjoy another great podcast. Thanks guys for taking the time to do these podcasts.

Did anyone else think the final Cal drive and score during the Oregon State game was delightfully lame?

Sorry, no Lair stories, but I’m not over the mascot issue.

It’s too bad that Ken can’t see the greatness of Sparky. Did you see the pushups, the acrobatics and the impish personality? This mascot has it all.

And Donald? Aren’t you missing something obvious? This delightfully lame mascot is a DUCK! Quack! Quack!

About upcoming Oregon State…

I watched the replay of the UCLA/Oregon State game. (It’s true, I DON’T have anything better to do.)

OSU won, but:

UCLA came from behind and tied the Beavers in the 4th qtr.
OSU’s defense is not strong.
The Rodgers bros are very good speed/skill players and Quizz will run on the Bears. However, Cal should be able to stop James on the end reverse. James will get open on the routes and Canfield looks solid.

For Cal it should come down to the OL and DL. If the DL puts pressure on Canfield, his passing game will suffer. If the OL keeps Riley upright, he should tear up the OSU secondary.

Quizz will get his yards. It’s about stopping James and the passing game..and letting Riley pass.

Next week we’re going to have to come up with a code word that will be particularly difficult to squeeze into a comment in a subtle way. You guys are good and we need to give you something more challenging.

BTW, there might be, and I emphasize might, be an actual prize of significant monetary value, for the first non-anonymous (i.e. they provide their e-mail address with the comment) person to answer with the code word next week.

pat barnes’ lovely fumble with 8 seconds left at WSU back in 1996, i think that was the year, was priceless. almost cost me $100, but cal covered because wsu took a safety to run out the clock. wasted 30 hours in a car. didn’t even stay in a hotel. got up there in the middle of the 1st, it was about 20 degrees with flurries. left right after the game and drove home. that was the beginning of a 5-0 turned 6-6 season. mariucci didn’t even use lube. painful year. go bears!

Kevin Riley’s fumbles against ASU reminded me of Pat Barnes, the most delightfully lame QB in Cal history.

I actually feel that more depressing than thinking about how well Oregon’s offense beating down USC was what happened a week beforehand – Oregon State moving with such ease against USC. Our own performance looks that much worse when you consider how well the Beavers did that night. As if the Rodgers brothers weren’t enough to occupy the mind by themselves, with THAT comparison in mind, this Saturday’s game looks somewhat grim. I think the only way we win is how USC did: with a shootout. As fun as a high-scoring affair would be, it would be awfully depressing to have our defense utterly torn apart by a tiny diminutive pair. Result? If we win, a delightfully lame game. If we lose… well let’s just say I almost cried that night in ‘07 (my senior year at Cal, such high hopes… dashed). And sorry, got no Lair stories.

Having been a just underage college student during my last trips to the Lair, I can say with confidence that what happens behind the dining hall (the staff cabins) is most definitely NOT family friendly once the sun sets.

But there is the occasional staffer story that is worth telling anyway.

I’d love to hear some of those Lair counselor stories, but I’m pretty sure Ken’s rule about keeping this place a family atmosphere would definitely prevent you from telling them.

I think hell has officially frozen over. Jason is actually becoming sorta, kindof… funny… rather than being delightfully lame like he usually is.

Hey guys. Thanks again for an entertaining podcast, as usual.

I, sadly, have no Lair stories. I have some from friends who were counselors up there, but I don’t think I can share those . . .

Speaking of things that are lame (not delightfully lame, but lame, just plain) a friend of mine pointed out that we should have a different name for the Wildcat offense, since we’re Bears. After deliberating, he came up with: “I’d like to propose the “Bear Claw” offense. Because, really, how often do you eat a bear claw pastry? Not very often, right? Yet you enjoy it every time, but eventually realize its an indulgence you can’t entertain
regularly.”

We’ll be bringing our A game from the East Coast.
